Merging the Worlds of Psychology, Philosophy and Neuroscience
The brain is the most complex organ in the human body, composed of billions of neurons (nerve cells) that communicate through synapses (connections) to control everything from basic bodily functions to complex cognitive processes like thinking, learning and decision-making.

Neurons that Fire together, Wire together
- Neuropsychologist Donald Hebb used this phrase to describe how pathways in the brain are formed and reinforced through repetition.
- He was able to merge the psychological world with the world of neuroscience.
- The more the brain does a certain task, the stronger that neural network becomes, making the process more efficient each time.
- This is why the practice of positive habits and moments of reflection can be so powerful!
- It creates and strengthens pathways in the brain each day.

Amygdala and Stress - a Neuroperspective
- When we encounter something unexpected, our amygdala, a part of our limbic system, is aroused
- And if the perception is danger, then the response becomes a pure threat reaction - also known as the fight, flight and freeze response.
- The latest research suggests that we trigger the same neural responses that drive us toward survival when we perceive the way we are treated by other people.
- When you are criticised, rejected or anything of the like, your brain will react as if your life is threatened.
- The threat response and the energy you spend on handling the threat response, occupy your brain and impair analytical thinking, creative insight and problem-solving.
- In other words, when you need your mental capabilities the most, your brain's internal resources are taken away from you in an unsafe environment.
